I am Fuyu (葉馥瑜), a Taiwanese textile artist specializing in weaving and tufting. 
My works 










present and interact with the relationship between people and nature, with the narration emerging from my making process. For me,  textile-making is a long journey of observing and thinking that inspires me to explore more interpretations of textile art in contemporary creation.

On the fifth anniversary of the 2020 flood disaster in Kumamoto, I spent nearly two months in residence in the Yatake mountain area of Hitoyoshi. During this time, I collaborated with local residents on a community art project that combined oral history with visual collage. In the workshops, participants shared personal observations of the Kumagawa landscape through photographs, drawings, and stories. Using the cyanotype process, I developed these precious images onto delicate silk fabric pieces, then sewed them together with the pattern arrangement inspired from Tatami in the residence.

I explore how embroidered structures perform dynamic narratives through layered gradient stitches and evolving patterns on velvet fabric. The visual composition draws inspiration from ancient mythological tapestries, where stories unfold through symbolic repetition and spatial sequencing. By arranging frames spatially rather than sequentially, I invite the viewer to navigate time freely, shifting across perspectives within a single glance. This approach reimagines animation as a non-linear, spatial experience rather than a time-bound one.

The theme reflects on traces and imprints of time through layered materiality and the unfolding accumulation of embroidered forms. Through patterned structures and varied textures, the work becomes a surface that reveals rhythm and transformation, like a visual poem in motion.

The series works stem from my project at the Textiel Lab of TextielMuseum in the Netherlands
in 2024. Through an experiment made possible by the technical support of TextielLab, I developed a twisted
thread technique that allows each tufting section to randomly display two halves of different colors,
resembling the irregular strokes and white spaces left by a dry brush or pencil on paper. When multiple
tufting lines are arranged together, they evoke the hatching lines of a sketch or even the brush strokes (皴法) of East Asian ink painting traditions.

After depicting my observations in the local area, I continued to extend the concept of sketching with the
rug itself as a carrier like paper, and using the “spiral coil binding” method, the rugs can even be stacked,
unfolded, or opened like a sketchbook in various postures.

During my five months stay in Štúrovo, I tried to keep my eyes open at all times. The specificity of this place on the border made me feel sometimes close, sometimes distant. For me, every exchange I experienced on both sides of the boundary was like a blink of the eye, bringing fresh ripples and inspiration.

The work is a reflection of the symbiotic relationship between the Slovakia-Hungary border. The people I met there may have their invisible national identity, as subtle as the light, but it shines through to their minds with conviction.

I put my greatest impression of the Danube in a basin of water. This work is suspended in the basin as if it had the surface tension of a liquid.

The work is based on the mosquito net from my childhood home. After my residency on the Slovakia-Hungary border, I tried to sketch 360-degree view I observed from the region on the net, as a reflection and dialogue between the inner and the outer world. When sitting inside, people can look around the landscape as if they were floating on the Danube.

As a former writer, one of the reason why I am fascinated by weaving is that the processes is like another way to write line after line. When the audience sees my work, it’s also like another way to read, wordlessly. 


I found a type of yarn that is pretty close to calligraphic lines, which had inspired me to start a series of soft sculptures. I used the traditional basketry weaving technique and then followed the particularity of the yarn, like writing and painting with ink, to give this series a contemporary appearance and organic textures. From my point of view, they are like 3D calligraphy or ink wash paintings, which are also sketches of internal monologue at the moment.

I moved to Slovakia for 5 months as a bridge guard. The life of living near the Danube reminded me of the memory of sketching outdoors in my childhood. I would like to use this way to guard the bridge as an artist. At the end of May, I pulled 500 meters of yarns on the bridge. The length was just as long as the bridge. Whenever I met someone, I cut the yarn, changed color and tied a knot to remember, just like in ancient times. Then I used the yarn to weave. The movement of weaving is similar to my experience of walking back and forth on the bridge as a border connecting Slovakia and Hungary in these days.

That day I also encountered something unexpected. The wind on the bridge was so strong and broke the yarn into several pieces! I decided to collect all the yarns and marked them with gray threads when I wove, so that the wind of the day could be included in my sketch. I also tied the knots on the yarn to mark the cutting points by wind and made them visible on the back of the tapestry.

On the work you can read the people I met on the bridge through the change of colors and the knots, line by line. The colors of the wool were hand dyed after I observed the scenery here. Therefore the weaving work could become an artistic act that integrates light and shadow, walking and meeting on the bridge, and produce a landscape sketch that reflected a specific moment in time.

More than once, I have witnessed the aftermath of cutting down a tree&#38;nbsp; in my neighborhood — an image that is not easily observed when the tree is still alive, so I get goosebumps when I come across the scene. It made me ponder: the same section of the trunk, and I wanted to “see” her in a gentler light.

I decided to sketch the cross-section of the other survival trees, with indirect and gingerly observations and hugging touches. I wanted to draw the outline of the ring that would not be visible before the tree was cut down, and silently 










wish we would never see each other face to face.

Residency in Bookstore Mist (薄霧書店), Taipei, Taiwan
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 
Plato said that most people in the world live in caves where they can only see shadows. The true and perfect reality lies beyond the cave. This metaphor distinguishes between educated and uneducated people.


Perhaps the dark world of shadows is not ideal, but it contains the possibility of perception, of allowing the light to happen at random. To think about the direction in the stirring of fire and shadow is also the true meaning of the bookstore's existence.

“People who experience reading, their own shadows and the shadows they see will change with them.” The thought and image came to my mind. And in the mist, what People can see are also shadows. That's why I wove some soft sculptures about shadows in a bookstore “Mist” like this. 










For the specific book I met, or even a whole book series, I wanted to weave a piece of shadow for them.
