About

I am Fuyu, a Taiwanese textile artist specializing in tapestry weaving. My works present and interact with the relationship between people and nature.

For me, weaving is like a long journey of seeing and thinking that inspires me to explore more possibilities of textile art in contemporary creation.

“Random” means by chance that brings about something unexpected even innovation. However, Our mind doesn’t work randomly. That’s difficult to create randomly from existing thinking or suggestion.

In the process of weaving, I found it separate to two chances, up or down, when the wool went through the warp. If we don't worry about the weaving rules, just take the wool to up or down casually, it will enter into binary “Random Variable.” Since we can’t foresee the pattern when we weave in that way, we won’t be interfered by existing thinking and weave something new unprecedentedly.

Though this kind of asymmetric new pattern is not complete random, it depends on the emotional state of the weaver, that decided the force and speed to bring the wool up or down. Therefore, this pattern can be viewed as the noise made by our emotion and improvisation, which reflect weaver’s  state of mind randomly.
